About Us

The team at Public Works Advisory supports New Zealand landowners who may lose land or land-use rights to the Crown or another acquiring authority for a public work.

Whether the acquisition is negotiated or compulsory, it always occurs under the considerable powers granted to the acquiring authority—most notably those in the Public Works Act 1981.

Public Works Advisory was established to level the playing field for landowners, who often face these processes with fewer resources and less support. When an acquiring authority decides it needs your land, you don’t have the option of simply saying “it’s not for sale.” Our mission is to help you achieve the fairest and market-aligned outcome possible.

“The compulsory taking of land can often be a devastating experience for an owner who genuinely does not want to part with land.”

Squire Speedy 1985.

Our Team

Our people have significant experience working on both local and central government public works projects involving property acquisition under the Public Works Act 1981. The extensive depth of specialist knowledge and experience gained is well suited to helping affected landowners achieve the best outcomes possible.
